Live Review : Nile + Hideous Divinity + Intrepid + Pestifer @ Rebellion, Manchester on September 10th 2024

Death metal was envisaged as a repugnant knee-jerk reaction to the excess and blatant commerciality of eighties hair metal. It was meant to burn bright and leave a grizzled corpse. However, something caught and nearly 40 years later Death Metal is in rude health. Tonight is an interesting and potent mix of obnoxious upstarts, cult heroes and venerated legends of the genre. Rebellion is heaving and the generational mix is both fascinating and varied.

Live Review : A'Priori + We Three Kings @ Waterloo Music Bar, Blackpool on September 6th 2024

As Blackpool basks in what is probably the last gasp of summer, it definitely feels like change is in the air.  And if it’s hot outside, in the confines of the Waterloo the sell-out crowd are pushing the temperatures up to the level of a day trip to fifth circle of Hell.

To say there is a level of excitement and anticipation ahead of tonight’s show, would be a colossal understatement.  Such is the loyalty and passion that A’Priori inspire, that many have travelled big distances to be here, from the furthest reaches of the country and even internationally to witness the launch of A’Priori’s new album “Voodoo Love”.

It’s a school night and the Kickin’ Valentina rock n’ roll circus rolls into Blackpool for an evening of rocket-fuelled, high energy sleaze n’ roll, and with the weekend just around the corner the crowd seem intent on starting it a day early. Kickin’ Valentina have forged a hard-won reputation for delivering no-nonsense electrifying live performances, this time around bringing along the effervescent The Midnight Devils, for what is set to be a double-bill of legendary proportions, and another entry into the annals of unforgettable nights at the Waterloo.

Live Review : Satan + Reaper @ The Bread Shed, Manchester on September 4th 2024

Rather than a case of "Wish you were here!", this evening is brought to you by "Why the hell weren't you here?”. You see Satan are simply astounding and it is an absolute travesty that not more of Manchester's metal fraternity are gathered in the cavernous confines of The Bread Shed to witness it. They manage to be astounding not in a rose-tinted spectacles nostalgia way, where you forgive the ravages of time in the light of being able to see living legends in the flesh.

Live Review : The Lazys + Junkyard Drive @ The Tivoli, Buckley on AUgust 31st 2024

Have you ever been to a gig which you suspected was going to be good, but when you got there it exceeded all your expectations? Well if you managed to catch The Lazys and Junkyard Drive on their current run of UK dates you may very well have. Both are not regular visitors to these shores, with The Lazys hailing all the way from Australia and Junkyard Drive hopping over the North Sea from Denmark, and both absolutely brought their A-game to the Tivoli on this occasion.

Live Review : Infected Rain + Skarlett Riot @ Rebellion,Manchester on August 30th 2024

Moldova's Infected Rain blew us away with their set at Bloodstock Festival a few weeks ago, and we couldn't pass up the chance to see them play a more intimate venue in Manchester. Their take on modern metal is unique and dynamic, and in Lena Scissorhands they have a charismatic and engaging focal point. We managed to catch up with Lena for a chat prior to the gig (Interview HERE) and then were treated to a superb headline set.

Live Review : Paul Di’Anno + Gypsy’s Kiss @ The Waterloo Music Bar, Blackpool on August 22nd 2024

Gypsy’s Kiss hold a special place in the storied history of Iron Maiden, being one of Steve Harris’ earliest bands, and to see them on the same bill as the legendary Paul Di’Anno has to be a Maiden completists dream.  Formed fifty years ago Gypsy’s Kiss returned to action six years ago after a decades long hiatus and what is immediately apparent is that the six -piece band certainly still have something to say and play with a verve and flair that belies a half century pedigree.

Live Review : The Mercury Riots + Heartbreak Remedy @ Vinyl Tap, Preston, August 18th 2024

Vinyl Tap continues their fine run of bringing the best rock n roll, both international and home-grown to their small but perfectly formed venue in the heart of Preston.  And tonight’s bill illustrates that perfectly, with the exquisite grooves of L.A’s The Mercury Riots sharing a stage with Cumbrian heroes, Heartbreak Remedy.  And whilst the two may be thousands of miles apart geographically, musically they share a common DNA, a desire to deliver good time, life-affirming rock n roll, that lets you forget your problems and worries for a couple of hours, and leaves you with a grin on your face and a lighter spirit.  And tonight, both bands proceed to do precisely that…

Live Review : Alkaline Trio + Lowlives @ O2 Ritz, Manchester on July 28th 2024

Now that Matt Skiba's substitute stint in Blink 182 has come to an end, it is time for Alkaline Trio to once again take the full extent of his attention. Over a warm mancunian weekend they have managed to sell out the Ritz for a second time on this particular jaunt around the shires despite competing distractions such as Radar festival (which ROCKFLESH are also covering, review HERE) and two comic cons.

Live Review : Bang Bang Firecracker + Mystiek + Black Water @ Percy’s Café Bar, Whitchurch on July 20th 2024

First visit to Percy’s tonight and wow, what a venue. It’s small, cosy, quirky and interesting. The band room is out the back and despite being fairly cramped the sound is good so if necessary you can sit in the comfort of an ex-aeroplane seat (with table in the arms and a working recline button) or dentist chair, with your drink on an NHS trolley, and watch proceedings on a video screen.

Live Review : Tigertailz + Takeaway Thieves @ The Tivoli, Buckley on July 19th 2024

After a hectic week or so of dashing around the world in pursuit of musical excellence it’s good to be back in the dark, cool confines of The Tivoli for 2 of the UK’s finest alliterations, Tigertailz and Takeaway Thieves. The bar is cheap, the atmos is friendly and the crowd is keen – just how a good gig should be.

Live Review : Graphic Nature + Cut Short + Paradigm @ The Live Rooms, Chester on July 18th 2024

Last year, Kent based Graphic Nature released their long awaited debut album “A Mind Waiting To Die”, and won over thousands of brand new fans with high energy performances at Download, 2000trees, and Reading/Leeds. Live Review : The Acacia Strain + Fuming Mouth + Judiciary @ Academy 3, Manchester on July 3rd 2024

It would have been eminently straightforward to stick identikit deathcore acts bands on this bill and placate the two-stepping masses. However, taking the easy route through life has never been how The Acacia Strain have rolled. As Vincent Burnett, there are lusciously charismatic frontman, intones during their set, this is all about being surrounded by your friends and Judiciary and Fuming Mouth are very much part of their posse, even if they do play significantly different variants of extreme metal. In fact, tonight is a masterclass in how diverse American extreme metal has become and anybody who dares to proclaim that it all sounds the same is simply not listening hard enough.

Live Review : Body Count + Slope @ O2 Ritz, Manchester on July 1st 2024

Body Count are a legendary force in the rap-metal scene, and their live shows are a testament to their enduring influence. In an era where genres constantly evolve and blend, they stick to their roots, delivering raw, unfiltered rap-thrash-punk rock that calls back to the origins of the genre while resonating powerfully with modern audiences.

Live Review : White Lightning + Electric Lady + Madhouse @ Sotto, Liverpool on June 28th 2024

Liverpool, despite its importance in the overall history of music, is not exactly renowned for a hard rock scene. In recent months though, there has been a rumble in the underground. Quite literally, as a lot of the little venues that are springing up and hosting some pretty decent rock and metal bands are in basements.  Tonight is no exception, but at least it’s not another dingy one. Quite the opposite really, as there are big windows to the street above the stage area which itself is surrounded by mirrors and lit by brightly-coloured LED strips. There is also decent Belgian beer on tap, places for the old and lazy to sit at the back, and some friendly bar staff. Unfortunately, tonight at least, there are also some Issues.

Live Review : Mr. Bungle + Spotlights @ O2 Ritz, Manchester on June 13th 2024

For anybody who grew up in metal in the late 80s/early 90s, Mr. Bungle were a disruptive enigma. They were spoken about with reverential hush tones as being a fiercely non-commercial bloodletting exercise so that Mike Patton could express his disdain at the unfeasible success story of his main band Faith No More. The bigger his day job became, the more he retreated into the anarchistic unpredictability of Mr. Bungle. For those of us being seduced by metals more avant-garde fringes, Mr. Bungle was an overtly enticing forbidden fruit.

Live Review : GEL + Split Chain @ Star and Garter, Manchester on June 12th 2024

New Jersey’s GEL are a modern take on classic Hardcore. Let me explain. In a Hardcore scene that is currently built around dynamic evolution of the traditional sound and direction - different genres and sub-genres being poured into the mix - GEL return to the raw aspects and punk elements of classic Hardcore. Their delivery of an authentic representation of what started it all off to a new generation has generated a massive buzz around them.

Live Review : Crypta + Odysseus @ The Ferret, Preston on June 11th 2024

Tonight is ROCKFLESH’s fourth trip of the year to Preston’s Ferret, the recently saved venue seemingly undergoing a brilliant rock/metal renaissance, with a string of top genre bands already under their belt, with more lined up for the second half of 2024. Grabbing international bookings of the calibre of a band like Crypta is quite the coup for the grassroots venue, giving North West death metal devotees the chance to witness this stellar band up close and personal in a sweaty, raucous display performance of epic proportions, as well as cementing their position as the city’s most vibrant live scene.

Live Review : Marco Mendoza Trio + Loz Campbell @ Waterloo Music Bar, Blackpool on June 6th 2024

Fresh from pulling double duties at the recent Call of the Wild festival, Loz Campbell tonight swaps the fields of Lincolnshire for the bracing seaside air of the Northwest coast.  A firm fixture on the circuit over the last few years, Loz and her band have certainly been paying their dues and this constant touring seems to be paying off, as they tear through a strong set with both commitment and style.

Live Review : The Moodswingers + Dirty Box Disco @ Waterloo Music Bar, Blackpool on June 3rd 2024

There have been a lot of rumours floating around about who The Moodswingers are. Lots of speculation, lots of hints and teasers. So tonight is a bit of a scoop for the Waterloo, because the one thing we do know is that this is a secret gig and therefore the Waterloo has been chosen for a world first, even if we don’t know exactly who will be playing it! But more of that later….
