Live Review : Resolve + Cane Hill + Acres + Half Me @ Rebellion, Manchester on May 8th 2024
French act Resolve have quickly become favourites at Rockflesh towers, with their blend of melodic metalcore. But they’re more than that. They break that pigeonhole with vibrant melodies and energetic groove. We did interview them in early 2023 (video interview) but this time they are back headlining Rebellion in support of their latest rather brilliant release “Human”.
Half Me are first on, the Germans are hitting the UK for the first time and provide us with a set to remember. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Sentinels and early Northlane, their sound is a blend of thundering basslines and infectious grooves. As they take the stage, Half Me exude a modest demeanour that quickly transforms into a swaggering, electrifying onslaught, echoing the intensity of bands like Emmure and Graphic Nature. Although the kick drum initially dominates the mix, the band swiftly finds their balance, treating the audience to a display of technical prowess and hardcore attitude.
The guitars, boasting a filthy tone akin to Vexed, showcase precision and gutsy power, while the drumming channels all the hardcore sensibilities you could wish for. Their tracks seamlessly transition from gritty dirty vocals to cleans, maintaining the tempo and intense atmosphere throughout. Half Me prove that they’re not just another run of the mill metal band, but a hardcore steeped force to be reckoned with. Their refreshing sound just about sets them apart, promising a bright future in the metal scene.
Acres are next on, and deliver a set that is undeniably reminiscent of Stabbing Westward, with every element, especially the vocals, echoing the iconic band's signature style. From the melodies to the overall vibe, Acres seem to channel the essence of Stabbing Westward while sticking their own unique twist into the mix. A good example is the newer material which takes on a heavier tone and hints of Cold Night For Alligators. Frontman Ben Lumber commands the stage with his engaging and energetic presence, his emotive voice cutting through the air like a razor-sharp blade.
From heart-wrenching clean melodies to guttural screams, Lumber's vocal range leaves no doubt about the depth of emotion behind each word he sings. The rest of the band seamlessly intertwines their instruments, creating a sonic tapestry that is both intricate and powerful. The driving guitar riffs lay down a melodic foundation, while the tight and thunderous basslines and drumming propel the music forward with unrelenting energy. Throughout the set, Acres flawlessly transition between moments of introspection and catchy up-beat passages, from delicate harmonies to unbridled aggression. In short, they prove that they are more than capable of delivering a memorable performance and promise much in the future.
Main support Cane Hill storm onto the stage with a crazy, full-on drum intro, plunging headfirst into their signature new nu-metal sound. The music hits hard and fast, although the definition gets lost in the intensity of the drums, which are dialled up to mega loud levels. Hailing from New Orleans, they bring their unique brand of aggression to the UK after a five-year absence. Anyone who likes to embrace the new-wave nu-metal genre will love these guys as they deliver that style with finesse.
The bass lines groove akin to Korn's percussive rhythms, while brutal guitar riffs reminiscent of Slipknot are supplemented by haunting high-end melodies, also evoking the spirit of Korn. The tribal drums add a pounding intensity to the mix, driving the songs forward with relentless energy. Tonight allows the band to demonstrate their full evolution and from the crowd's violent enthusiasm it’s going down a treat. Cane Hill's set is characterized by bouncing grooves and energetic performances, igniting a fervent moshpit among the crowd, and leaving plenty grinning.
As they strut onto the stage you can immediately see that headliners Resolve have matured both visually and audibly, yet their enthusiasm remains as infectious as ever, now coupled with an even slicker stage presence. Taking the spotlight as proper headliners, they elevate the atmosphere to another level with their professional performance from start to finish. From the offset it's evident that Resolve command the crowd's attention effortlessly, with vocalist Anthony Diliberto's live vocals shining brilliantly. Their stage setup, complemented by impressive lighting, adds an extra layer of grandeur to their performance, creating a captivating visual spectacle.
Their brand of melodic hardcore-infused metalcore is on a different level following the release of their last album “Human”. Fans of Normandie and Don Broco will find themselves right at home amidst Resolve's melodic sections, but the dynamic heavy hitting portions will reel-in fans of While She Sleeps, seamlessly blending up-tempo tech-hardcore stompers with slower atmospheric segments. Throughout the set Resolve showcase their versatility and songwriting prowess, with tracks like ‘Seasick Sailor’ from earlier album “Between Me and The Machine” receiving an enthusiastic pit while ‘In Stone’ give an opportunity to stop and feel its fragility. Their ability to blend melody and passion is exemplified in every note, demonstrating both intensity and beauty in their music.
Whether delivering heavy-hitting force or delicate moments of introspection, Resolve prove their ability to command the stage with unwavering energy and professionalism. With each member putting on a show of their own, bounding about the stage with undeniable charisma they are clearly leaving a lasting impression on the crowd. Their dedication to crafting expertly executed songs translates seamlessly into the live show. Finally the whole throng join in on the main keyboards melody of set closer ‘New Colors’ Rebellion has become a second home to Resolve as they continue to build a loyal following with every performance. Their trajectory towards success seems to have taken a steep rise as they have all the elements in place – they deserve every plaudit and more.
