Live Review : Karnivool + The Ocean @ Academy 2, Manchester on February 7th 2023
If you're looking for a band that blends the perfect mix of atmospheric and progressive metal, then look no further than The Ocean. As a band they’ve been plying their trade for over a decade with a sound that blends heavy, driving riffs with complex arrangements and a cerebral approach to song-writing. The German-based quintet are established as one of the most innovative and captivating acts in modern metal, and tonight is no exception. The Ocean live are equally impressive as they are on record, delivering a powerful and unforgettable performance that showcases their incredible musicianship and emotional intensity. A true powerhouse of sound, combining elements of Interpol and Thrice, with Leprous and Wheel, and a dash of Sleep Token and Gojira thrown in for good measure. Frontman Loïc Rossetti is a true star, with an often-hooded presence that adds to the mysterious aura of the band, his vocals are simply breath-taking - from soaring highs to gritty lows, his voice is truly a marvel to behold. The bass is funky and groovy, adding a touch of funk to the otherwise heavy sound, and the drumming is a true masterclass in syncopation, keeping the beat moving and the crowd engaged. The guitar is equally as engaging, unleashing riffs that will leave you in awe. The tech-metal elements of the band are truly a force to be reckoned with, and the mystical, folk feel of some of the songs adds a unique touch to the sound. Whether it's a festival stage, like at Tech Fest, or a small club, this band always commands the attention of the crowd, leaving fans in awe of their intricate, mesmerizing soundscapes.
If you're a fan of heavy, technical, and thought-provoking rock music, then you've surely come across the name Karnivool. This Perth-based quintet has been one of the most influential and ground-breaking bands in the progressive rock scene for over two decades. Their unique blend of hard-hitting riffs, intricate drum patterns, atmospheric electronics, and emotional vocals has earned them a dedicated following around the world. Every song is intentionally grandiose, making you feel like you're a part of something much bigger. But the true key to their success is the song writing. It's unique and superb, a testament to their immense talent. Vocalist Ian Kenny's haunting voice, combined with the intricate guitar work of Mark Hosking and Drew Goddard, creates a sound that is both powerful and complex. The rhythm section of Jon Stockman on bass and Steve Judd on drums brings a tight and driving energy to their music, all of them providing a layer of atmosphere and depth. Tonight, they are hypnotic and mesmerizing, Kenny’s voice leaving you spellbound. The intricate guitars, thundering bass, and driving drums all come together in a way that is simply note perfect from the very first beat. Stunning is the only word I can use to describe their performance. It's been so long since they last came here and they still managed to exceed all expectations. The bass in ‘Simple Boy’ was out of this world, and the vocals added an extra soulful touch to the music. The electro pad and drum outro are the perfect lead-out before their encore, and New Day capped an amazing end to the show. If you haven't seen Karnivool live, I highly recommend you do, any chance you get. These guys are truly phenomenal.
