100. Napalm Death - 'Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism'
Napalm Death have existed in some form or another since 1981, but the band as we know it solidified in 1987 with the release of “Scum”. An utter game-changer of an album, it brought Grind-core into the spotlight as an even more extreme version of death metal. Short, sharp and nasty as hell. Thirty-three years later, we have record number sixteen from Napalm Death. They may have slowed down a tad (‘Invigorating Clutch’ is practically doom) and they may be now be able to write songs that last longer than 60 second, but they are as primal and gnarly as ever. This is a masterclass in extreme metal. Heavy, jagged and direct. It has no subtleties and no nuances. Just track after track of careering noise. Loud, invigorating and utterly peerless.
