Bloodstock Festival Countdown : 30 Bands Not To Miss
11. Raised By Owls - Ronnie James Dio Stage - Sunday, August 11th 2024
Comedy metal has become a complex and multi-versed beast. There is the Python-esque absurdity of Evil Scarecrow, There is the Benny Hill revivalist movement that is Steel Panther (“look tits he he he he) and there is the children's birthday party in hell vibe of Party Cannon. Raised by owls are not taking the piss, they are far more astute than that. They love metal as much as we do but also, they are instinctively aware of its absurdities, quirks and unwritten bylaws. Raised by Owls our comedy metal that gently pokes fun at the stupidity of our beloved music.
They know their Benediction from their Bolt thrower, their Deicide from their Dying Fetus and they are rather handy at penning a tune. But rather than go down the formulaic avenue of songs about depravity and the devil they instead prefer to write songs about Danzig appearing on strictly come dancing and whatever magnitudinous madness goes on in Fred Durst head.
So make sure you're up early on Sunday because it is the opportunity for you to simultaneously have a good old laugh and bang it. And, most importantly, it is very likely that Sam's mum (who seems to spend more time on my timeline than my ruddy family) will be introducing them. See you can’t get a better endorsement than that.
I just love Metal. I love it all. The bombastity of symphonic, the brutality of death, the rousing choruses of power, the nihilistic evil of black, the pounding atmospherics of doom, the whirling time changes of prog, the faithful familiarity of trad, the other worldlyness of post, the sheer unrefined power of thrash. I love it all!
