Bloodstock Festival Countdown : 30 Bands Not To Miss - Sylosis
22. Sylosis - Sophie Lancaster Stage - Saturday, August 10th 2024 - 20.00 - 21.00
There is not a band that encapsulates dogged determination more than Sylosis. For 24 years they have slogged their guts out. They have had more miraculous comebacks than Novak Djokovic and have changed direction more times than a formula one driver. They started off as part of the thrash rival, the ying to Evile’s yang but there was always more to them than driving riffs and yelped vocals.
There is an intelligence to their brand of metal that feels edifying and unique. They are heavy and corrosive but there is thought and contemplation in their cacophony of noise. Their evolution from thrash through melodic death metal and into their present location of anthemic modern metal (think early noughties Slipknot when they could do no wrong) has felt natural and linear.
Quite simply they are songsmiths of the highest virtuosity. They carve out choruses that demand a baying crowd and understand the tension between primal and technical that is the power behind modern metal. This may be illustrious return number bippity boppity but it is still a show not to miss.
I just love Metal. I love it all. The bombastity of symphonic, the brutality of death, the rousing choruses of power, the nihilistic evil of black, the pounding atmospherics of doom, the whirling time changes of prog, the faithful familiarity of trad, the other worldlyness of post, the sheer unrefined power of thrash. I love it all!
