19. Laster - "Andermans Mijne"

More avant-garde black metal and another album that is unashamedly stunningly odd. The band themselves describe their output as being obscure dance music and there is a sense of rhythm to their deconstructed ditties. The nearest approximation I can find is the late lamented Cardiacs in the fact that there is a childlike exuberance to both band's impenetrable strangeness.

This is an album that wears its peculiarity on its sleeve like some sort of medal. It has no intent on being easy but happily throws in nuggets of melody to keep the listener interested. It is hypnotically weird, and you find yourself entranced by the abnormal time signatures and eccentric shifts in tempo. Unconventional, unorthodox but also utterly wonderful. There is something idiosyncratically brilliant about this record.
