70. Bury Tomorrow - 'Cannibal'
There are a fair few albums on this list that have been buried by 2020. Albums that would have built momentum during the year, fuelled by triumphant festival appearances and months and months of solid touring. With the live arena mothballed, bands have had to stick their material out and hope for the best. “Cannibal” is one such album. By far and away the best thing Bury Tomorrow have ever created, its release should have triggered a tidal wave that would have whisked them to the top of the pile. This was their time, and this was the record that would finally allow them to realise their potential.
We of course all know the story. Hoping that this thing would go away, they kept delaying “Cannibal’s” March release until it slipped out, almost unnoticed, in July. All of which is a crushing shame as it deserves as big an audience as possible. It is a delicious marriage of heavy and melody.
Bury Tomorrow have crafted eleven songs that are accessible enough to be able to carve them out a new audience, but also dense and brittle enough to maintain the interest of their hardcore devotees. With regret and utter sadness, I found myself again and again thinking ‘god this track would sound great live’. One day, one day....
