50. My Dying Bride - 'The Ghost of Orion'
Continuing with the legends theme, here comes one of the most influential, but also one of the most unsung, British metal bands of the last thirty years. Their grubby fingerprints are all over our music’s evolution during the last three decades, yet they are still very much a cult concern. My Dying Bride marry goth and doom in totally unique way. Their sound is earthy, organic and distinctly unrefined. It is heavy and pounding, but also borrows heavily from the stark fragility of rustic English folk.
“Ghost of Orion” does not see them deviate much from the blueprint that they followed since 1990. It combines harsh and brittle passages with delicate emotional movements that sees them wear their charred black hearts on their sleeves. This is doom metal as an emotive force, bringing to life tales of hardship and adversity. But as with any My Dying Bride album their gift is showing that in the midst of despair there are always small glimmers of hope.
