37. Delain - 'Apocalypse & Chill'

February seems a very long time ago. Back in those heady days of live entertainment and drinking long after ten o’clock, Delain had the World in their hands. “Apocalypse and Chill” had been unleashed to universal acclaim and they were in the midst of their most ambitious tour yet, eliciting rave reviews from all and sundry (including me). Then, well we know what happened next.... the rug got pulled well and truly from under their feet.

So here we are in November and we reflect on a year that certainly didn’t pan out as Charlotte and co envisaged. Whist the pandemic may have stifled “Apocalypse and Chill” commercial impact, it certainly hasn’t stopped it being a stunningly good record. This is the album where Delain grew up. It is a mature, immaculately choreographed collection of slick adult-oriented rock. They have toned down the symphonic pomp and instead concentrated on rich melodies and sumptuous choruses. I can’t stress enough how well made the album is. Yes, it's rather safe and yes, it rather predictable, but it's such a joy to listen to. By far and away the best thing they have done, it's just a shame that world domination will have to wait for another day.
