18. Rannoch - 'Reflections Upon Darkness'
The perception is that Heavy Metal is a blunt instrument. An unrepentant wall of unsophisticated noise. “Reflections on Darkness” is one of those albums that proves beyond doubt that Metal can be subtle, refined and multi-layered. Yes, it is heavy, but that is also full of texture, passion and precision. It is complex, refined and sumptuous in how fully realised it feels.
It does have Death Metal in its DNA, but Death Metal with its jagged edges smoothed over. It retains its power and drive, but presents it in a polished, slick package. Its overall sound is reserved and full of depth and conviction. A fabulous example that Heavy Metal can be spine tinglingly emotive and intelligent. Superb!
